The standard academic entry requirement for this PhD is an upper second-class (2:1) honours degree in a discipline directly relevant to the PhD (or international equivalent) OR any upper-second class (2:1) honours degree and a Master鈥檚 degree at merit in a discipline directly relevant to the PhD (or international equivalent).

Programme description

Research in covers six broad ; aerospace engineering, innovative manufacturing, modelling and simulation, nuclear engineering, resilient systems, and structures in extreme environments.

Our postgraduate research programmes in Mechanical Engineering offer the opportunity to study in a multi-disciplinary team alongside leading academics in the field. Drawing on our expertise in advanced machining, resource efficient manufacturing, micro and nano fabrication, bio-manufacturing, laser engineering and more we deliver solutions to improve manufacturing capability, productivity, sustainability and emerging advanced technologies.

Your research will be supported by state-of-the-art computational and experimental facilities. We have strong links with industry and excellent employability.

Fees

For entry in the academic year beginning September 2025, the tuition fees are as follows:

  • PhD (full-time)
    UK students (per annum): Band A - TBC; Band B - 拢7,400; Band C - 拢10,500; Band D - 拢15,200; Band E - 拢25,700
    International, including EU, students (per annum): Band A - 拢29,400; Band B - 拢31,500; Band C - 拢37,300; Band D - 拢45,200; Band E - 拢59,900
  • PhD (part-time)
    UK students (per annum): Band A 拢TBC; Band B 拢7,400; Band C 拢10,500; Band D 拢15,200; Band E 拢25,700

The programme fee will vary depending on the cost of running the project. Fees quoted are fully inclusive and, therefore, you will not be required to pay any additional bench fees or administration costs.

Exciting changes in the School of Engineering

The School of Engineering has reorganised into five departments: Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Management, Computer Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. This change will not impact on the delivery of your programme of study. However, during this transition, you may still see references to the former Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering.
